The MK-01 knife is a premium handmade knife in the MK Knives & Tools workshop, designed for outdoor use and other applications depending on the materials used for its production.
About standards and knifemaking process in MK Knives & Tools
Knifemaker Marcin Kampka does not compromise. Each of his products is planned down to the smallest detail, each project, especially custom one, must have individual features. Each knife must have a perfect finish, grinding, chamfering etc. All screws – even the smallest ones, are slightly chamfered to remove angular finishes. Each knife is treated as a separate unit and the holster is also treated like one. One must match the other, the patterns on the holster must be consistent with the patterns on the handles etc. By mirroring each MK Knives & Tools knife, we not only see the product, but also “feel” the hours spent in the studio. When we buy Marcin’s product, we buy many hours of his work. We can be sure that the knife has been pampered down to the smallest detail.
About MK-01 model
MK-01 is made of various types of steel (Elmax, Vanadis 4 Extra, Vanadis 23), with different blade finishes (PVD coating, stonewash, satin). The handle is usually made of G10 composite, with a variety of colors and a variety of original patterns, including those created by filling the designed cavities with resin in a color also selected by the knifemaker. For each model produced, the knifemaker creates a suitable Kydex® holster, the colors of which (holster and accessories) correspond to the colors of the blade and the handle so that the whole is a coherent set. The materials used determine the more precise use of the knife. For example, models in a black PVD coating with a Kydex® holster in dark colors will certainly appeal to military-tactical solutions enthusiasts, considering also that all holsters can be attached to the MOLLE® system, harness elements or a tactical backpack.
About the presented version of the MK-01 knife
Premium steel as the core of the knife construction
The presented MK-01 is made of one piece of Vanadis 23 steel. So it is a full-tang knife. The steel used in the knife is an extremely durable material, very hard, resistant to overload, abrasion and chipping. The knife has been coated with a black PVD coating which additionally strengthens the steel and improves anti-corrosion properties. The coating has anti-reflective properties, which also makes it suitable for tactical use. For an even better visual effect, the blade has been finished with the stonewash method in the proprietary MK Knives & Tools variety.
Grind and blade shake for effective cutting
Knife blade were made with realu universal an effective full flat grind. When looking at the blade, we notice a quite oval drop point blade (a larger bulge on the cutting edge part at the tip of the blade). This is a deliberate measure to strengthen the blade in this area. If we take a closer look at the curves, we will notice that it is obviously not a tanto, which is known for its durability, but the shape resembles it slightly. Of course, this is a trick that serves both strength and versatility of the blade.
On the back of the blade, a jimpig has been made, which makes it easier to press the blade of the knife to the material being cut. This element enables precise cuts, makes it easier to guide the cutting edge along the material and helps with cuts that require pressure.
Durable, thought through knife handle
The slender, neat oval of the handle fits very well and lies firmly in the hand, its gentle profiling helps to prevent the hand from slipping onto the cutting edge. The rounded spine protruding from each side makes the knife comfortable and secure.
The handles with an ergonomic, oval shape are made of a very durable green G10 composite, with black spacers made of the same material. G10 is resistant to moisture, temperature changes, most solvents and acids and has high resistance to mechanical damage. In the presented knife, the material of the covers has a rough pattern that prevents the handle from slipping in the hand. The handle covers have been screwed with steel screws just like the blade covered with a PVD coating. The screws complete the knife design, elegantly matching the black blade.
The elements distinguishing the handle are black epoxy resin fillings formed in the form of a honeycomb, located on the handle.
At the end of the knife handle there is a hole for attaching an additional paracord, which can be used as a protection against dropping the knife during work, or an additional gripper that makes it easier to remove the knife from the holster. Originally, it includes a section of paracord with a shade matched to the design. The pointed end of the knife, in which we find a paracord hole, can break glass.
Refined Kydex® holster
The knife has a holster made of hand-formed Kydex® material, which is characterized by high impact and scratch resistance, low moisture absorption, resistance to various weather conditions and many chemicals. In the presented model, the holster is made of black material, supplemented with black and green accessories (black grommet, black steel screws coated with a PVD coating). The holster can be attached to the belt – with a grommet made of durable nylon with a heavy weight. Thanks to the holes used, we can mount it on parts of the harness, back, parts of the MOLLE® system, etc. An additional section of paracord is attached to the holster in a color that corresponds to the string at the knife.
The holster features a “reflection” of a pattern – a honeycomb that appears on the handle, which emphasizes the coherence of the entire design.
