Peltonen Knives – Pure Nordic Craftmanship. Since 1995.
Peltonen Knives is a brand from Finland inextricably linked with the creator of the knife known in Finnish as Sissipuukko and in English as Ranger Puukko. Juha-Pekka Peltonen (J-P Peltonen), the man in question, is a retired Finnish army soldier who participated in peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, the Sinai Peninsula, and served as a UN peace observer in Lebanon and Kashmir. It was after returning from the mission in Lebanon in 1979 that Peltonen, inspired by the knives used by American soldiers, seriously conceived the idea of creating his own version of the puukko knife. Combining the traditional Finnish puukko with designs featuring military aesthetics, Peltonen created the ‘sissipuukko,’ i.e., the Ranger Puukko M95, introducing it in 1995 as standard equipment for the Finnish army. A smaller version created in 2007, named Ranger Puukko M07, laid the foundation for a range of knives based for many years on two sizes, meeting the needs of military personnel, hunters, bushcraft enthusiasts, survivalists, campers, and all who spend time in nature. Today’s Peltonen Knives offer a wealth of options in terms of handle colors, blade finishes, and sheath types and colors, accommodating the needs of both right- and left-handed individuals.
Ranger Puukko – Scout Knife – A Knife for Everyone
Carefully designed by a Finnish army officer to meet the harsh realities of the Finnish wilderness, the Ranger Puukko meets the demands of international military special forces and is perfectly suited for civilian use. Its sturdy construction, secure grip, and comfort of the universally designed handle are key features. The blade maintains its sharpness for a long time, is easy to sharpen, and offers safety and ease of use, qualities appreciated by various user groups today. Bushcraft, hunting, survival, tactical operations, hiking, and camping are the key applications for the Ranger Puukko / Sissipuukko.
Its utilitarian design, without unnecessary additions, precise craftsmanship using carefully selected materials, and the sheath designed by J-P Peltonen with his ‘EasyLock‘ system, allowing for horizontal and vertical carrying and easy access to the blade, make this knife a versatile and reliable tool.
The Ranger Puukko is a successful synthesis of the traditional Puukko (utility knife) and a military knife (robustness). These knives are not only reliable tools created in the harsh conditions of the north but also symbols of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence.
Solid Construction and Reliability in All Conditions
**BLADE**: The blade is made of Swedish 14C28N stainless steel, known for its resistance to mechanical stress and ease of maintenance due to its excellent anti-corrosion properties. The spine of the blade, measuring 4.5 mm | 0.177″, ensures durability during use, while its drop point profile and thinner edge near the cutting surface deliver outstanding performance.
**GRIND AND CUTTING EDGE**: The uncoated blades of Peltonen Knives feature a ‘highground scandi‘ grind, commonly referred to as a ‘scandi’ grind, with a hand-formed micro cutting edge.
**HANDLE**: The knife features a full tang construction, meaning the steel extends through the entire length and width of the handle to its end. This is the most durable design found in fixed-blade knives. The handle scales are crafted from curly birch, a wood native to the region, known for its unique and intricate grain patterns, making each piece one of a kind. The scales are glued and securely attached to the tang with steel pins. A hole at the end of the knife is designed for attaching a lanyard, strap, or similar accessory.
**LEATHER SHEATH**: The sheath is made from high-quality, vegetable-tanned natural leather with a 3 mm thick wall. This is an excellent option for those who prefer natural knife sheaths. It includes an internal plastic insert to protect the leather from being pierced and a hole at the end for moisture drainage. It features the EasyLock system, similar to the synthetic sheath. The sheath includes a belt loop with a Velcro fastener compatible with MOLLE and PALS systems.
**EASYLOCK SYSTEM**: An innovation introduced by J-P Peltonen, available in both composite and leather sheaths. EASYLOCK ensures that, regardless of the knife’s carrying position—whether traditionally at the traveler’s waist or upside down on a soldier’s shoulder—it remains securely held and will not accidentally fall out of the sheath. A rubber wheel at the sheath’s entry/exit point guides the knife in and out, locking it securely in place. This rubber allows the TPE-formed guard to be clamped inside the sheath, preventing uncontrolled release. A thumb support with a textured grip is integrated into the handle for easy knife extraction.
