The designs stem from the creator’s military interests, which is reflected in solid constructions designed to meet the most demanding tasks. In particular executions of KD Knives, we can observe intricate cuts, finely formed arches and bends characteristic of his projects. Taking into account the fact that all of these treatments are carried out by hand, the overall aesthetics of the workmanship is even more impressive.
KD Knives offer includes knives with a fixed blade and with a folding blade like the flagship Arsen. The catalog of applications includes blades for survival, bushcraft, general outdoor use, everyday use (EDC) and tactical use. The catalog of materials used by Kamil Dlugosz includes steels like Elmax, M390, M398, S35VN, Vanadis 4 Extra, handle materials like G10, Micarta, carbon fiber, fat carbon, or used to create Kydex sheaths and others.
About Cayman knife in general
Defender is a large knife designed for demanding survival and tactical tasks. The knife presents the highly end of materials set up and workmanship execution which is characteristic for KD Knives. The 141 mm (5.55″) long blade with over 5 mm (0.20″) spine gives great strength, also sideways, even with high overloads (e.g. during splitting or chopping the wood). According to the creator’s philosophy, drawing on tactical interests, “the knife should be solid enough to cope with the task also in an emergency, even at the cost of destroying it”, which in the case of Cayman would not be easy.
Handmade / Custom made
The taste of the whole is added by individualized, meticulous handmade. This means that the original shape, all grinds, satin, arches, curves, the shape and texture of the handle covers, even the detailed finish of the screws, not to mention the holster, are the result of the creator’s hands work. This is a ‘custom’ type, unique in the details of the blade profiles and handle linings.
About presented Cayman knife
Excellent steel as a core of the construction
Knife is made of one piece of Elmax steel. It is a knife with a full-tang construction, where the steel runs the entire length and width of the handle to which the covers have been attached. Full-tang is the most durable type of construction found in fixed-blade knives.
Elmax steel blade has excellent utility features: long-lasting sharpness, stainless steel and reliable durability (high resistance to abrasion, high resistance to mechanical damage).
Grind and blade shape for efficient cuttingÂ
The blade of the knife has been made with a flat grind, which is very effective and universal in use. The blade peak is on the one hand a cutting edge going towards the tip, and on the back side a false blade visible as a swedge, which improves the penetration properties of the knife.
On the spine of the blade, a notch (upper jimpig) has been made, smoothly passing into the handle, which makes it easier to press the knife blade to the material being cut, and improves the grip of the handle without affecting the comfort of holding the tool in the hand. Jimping makes precise cuts, facilitates guiding the cutting edge along the material and helps with cuts that require pressure.
Stylish and comfortable handle
The handle gives the opportunity to work in a comfortable way, regardless of whether the knife is held by hand or in a glove. In the construction, there are noticeable elements that are important for the comfort and safety of work. These are: a finger guard profiled in steel to help prevent the hand from slipping onto the cutting edge, undercut for the fingers, noticeable and constituting an additional point of support, but so delicate that it does not force only one way of gripping, widening the end part of the handle, naturally making it difficult to slide out knife out of hand while working.
The handle linings are made of elegant carbon fiber. The material is resistant to moisture, temperature changes, most solvents and acids, and has high resistance to mechanical damage. The handle covers have been screwed with steel screws with a finish consistent with the finish of the blade (M5 screws are also hand-finished).
At the end of the knife handle there is a hole for attaching an additional cord, which can be used as a protection against dropping the knife during work, or an additional gripper that facilitates removing the knife from the holster.
Kydex sheath
The knife has a holster made of hand-molded Kydex material, characterized by high impact and scratch resistance, low moisture absorption, resistant to various weather conditions and many chemicals.
The holster is attached to the belt with the attached tek-lok buckle or a proprietary solution. The buckle ensures mounting on MOLLE type solutions. The holster is equipped with through holes that can be used optionally to attach the set to a backpack or a tactical harness element with a rope, string or paracord.
