Peltonen Knives – Pure Nordic Craftmanship. Since 1995.
Peltonen Knives is a brand from Finland inextricably linked with the creator of the knife known in Finnish as Sissipuukko and in English as Ranger Puukko. Juha-Pekka Peltonen (J-P Peltonen), the man in question, is a retired Finnish army soldier who participated in peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, the Sinai Peninsula, and served as a UN peace observer in Lebanon and Kashmir. It was after returning from the mission in Lebanon in 1979 that Peltonen, inspired by the knives used by American soldiers, seriously conceived the idea of creating his own version of the puukko knife. Combining the traditional Finnish puukko with designs featuring military aesthetics, Peltonen created the ‘sissipuukko,’ i.e., the Ranger Puukko M95, introducing it in 1995 as standard equipment for the Finnish army. A smaller version created in 2007, named Ranger Puukko M07, laid the foundation for a range of knives based for many years on two sizes, meeting the needs of military personnel, hunters, bushcraft enthusiasts, survivalists, campers, and all who spend time in nature. Today’s Peltonen Knives offer a wealth of options in terms of handle colors, blade finishes, and sheath types and colors, accommodating the needs of both right- and left-handed individuals.
Ranger Puukko – A Knife for Everyone
Carefully designed by a Finnish army officer to meet the harsh realities of the Finnish wilderness, the Ranger Puukko meets the demands of international military special forces and is perfectly suited for civilian use. Its sturdy construction, secure grip, and comfort of the universally designed handle are key features. The blade maintains its sharpness for a long time, is easy to sharpen, and offers safety and ease of use, qualities appreciated by various user groups today. Bushcraft, hunting, survival, tactical operations, hiking, and camping are the key applications for the Ranger Puukko / Sissipuukko.
Its utilitarian design, without unnecessary additions, precise craftsmanship using carefully selected materials, and the sheath designed by J-P Peltonen with his ‘EasyLock‘ system, allowing for horizontal and vertical carrying and easy access to the blade, make this knife a versatile and reliable tool.
The Ranger Puukko is a successful synthesis of the traditional Puukko (utility knife) and a military knife (robustness). These knives are not only reliable tools created in the harsh conditions of the north but also symbols of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence.
Solid Construction and Reliability in All Conditions
**BLADE**: The blade made from carbon steel 1.2235 (80CrV2) is highly resistant to mechanical overloads. The spine of the blade, with a thickness of 4.25 mm (0.167″), ensures durability during use. Its drop point profile, with a thinner edge near the cutting area, provides excellent performance. The blade made from this steel retains its cutting edge very well and can be relatively easily resharpened when necessary. Since the blade is made of carbon steel, it should be thoroughly washed and dried after use, which will protect the knife from corrosion.
**PTFE COATING**: The coating protects carbon steel from corrosion and has been used in Peltonen knives for 30 years. It reduces friction more than uncoated stainless steel blades, minimizes light reflection, protects the knife from scratches and dirt buildup. The coating enhances cutting performance and requires less energy from the user when working with wood. It is highly durable and certified for food processing applications.
**GRIND AND CUTTING EDGE**: Peltonen Knives blades with coatings feature a ‘highground Scandinavian grind,’ simply known as a ‘Scandi’ grind, with a cutting edge formed at a 25° angle. This refers to the uncoated part of the blade (the cutting edge itself), which is the only part that should be sharpened.
**HANDLE**: The full tang runs through the entire handle, which is completely covered in TPE (thermoplastic elastomer). This material provides a comfortable grip and ease of use in wet conditions and cold weather. The handle’s optimized volume fits most hands, and the non-slip texture on the underside ensures comfort in nearly all conditions. The handle material is durable, moisture-resistant, non-slip, impervious to chemicals and temperature fluctuations, and resistant to impacts and abrasion. It is designed to minimize the risk of blisters during use.
**KYDEX SHEATH**: The sheath is made of hand-formed Kydex material, which is highly resistant to impacts, scratches, has low moisture absorption, is resistant to various weather conditions and many chemicals. The holster is attached to the belt using a textile eyelet. The holster is equipped with through holes that can be used optionally to attach the set to a backpack or a tactical harness element with a rope, string or paracord.
