Peltonen Knives – Pure Nordic Craftmanship. Since 1995.
Peltonen Knives is a brand from Finland inextricably linked with the creator of the knife known in Finnish as Sissipuukko and in English as Ranger Puukko. Juha-Pekka Peltonen (J-P Peltonen), the man in question, is a retired Finnish army soldier who participated in peacekeeping missions in Cyprus, the Sinai Peninsula, and served as a UN peace observer in Lebanon and Kashmir. It was after returning from the mission in Lebanon in 1979 that Peltonen, inspired by the knives used by American soldiers, seriously conceived the idea of creating his own version of the puukko knife. Combining the traditional Finnish puukko with designs featuring military aesthetics, Peltonen created the ‘sissipuukko,’ i.e., the Ranger Puukko M95, introducing it in 1995 as standard equipment for the Finnish army. A smaller version created in 2007, named Ranger Puukko M07, laid the foundation for a range of knives based for many years on two sizes, meeting the needs of military personnel, hunters, bushcraft enthusiasts, survivalists, campers, and all who spend time in nature. Today’s Peltonen Knives offer a wealth of options in terms of handle colors, blade finishes, and sheath types and colors, accommodating the needs of both right- and left-handed individuals.
Ranger Cub – An Everyday and Precision Work Knife
The Ranger Cub is the long-awaited addition to the Peltonen Knives lineup. It excels as a knife for everyday tasks and will always be within reach, thanks to the ability to carry it along the belt with a Pull-the-Dot snap loop, which opens and closes only from one angle, securing the knife from being lost. Additionally, when carried around the neck on the included paracord, it serves well as a knife for precise camp tasks. Carried this way, it is always within reach, easily drawn, and quickly cuts rope, sharpens sticks, or carves holes in wood. In this configuration, the Ranger Cub perfectly complements larger forest blades such as the Ranger Puukko M95 or M07, but it is also an excellent standalone performer when needed.
Solid Construction and Reliability in All Conditions
**BLADE**: The blade, made of 1.2235 (80CrV2) carbon steel, is resistant to mechanical overloads. The spine of the blade, with a thickness of 3.3 mm (0.13″), ensures durability during use, and its drop point profile, reminiscent of a dagger with a single cutting edge, features a thinner blade near the cutting edge, providing excellent performance, including above-average penetration capabilities. The blade made from this steel retains its cutting edge well and is relatively easy to sharpen. Since the blade is made of carbon steel, it should be thoroughly washed and dried after use to protect the knife from corrosion.
**GRIND AND CUTTING EDGE**: The uncoated blades of Peltonen Knives feature a ‘highground scandi‘ grind, commonly referred to as a ‘scandi’ grind, with a hand-formed micro cutting edge (angle of sharpening approximately 20°).
**HANDLE**: The full tang runs through the entire handle, which is completely covered in TPE (thermoplastic elastomer). This material provides a comfortable grip and ease of use in wet conditions and cold weather. The handle’s optimized volume fits most hands, and the non-slip texture on the underside ensures comfort in nearly all conditions. The handle material is durable, moisture-resistant, non-slip, impervious to chemicals and temperature fluctuations, and resistant to impacts and abrasion. It is designed to minimize the risk of blisters during use.
**KYDEX SHEATH**: Kydex is a very durable material, highly resistant to impacts and scratches. It features low moisture absorption, resistance to various weather conditions, and many chemicals. Holsters made from it are convenient and long-lasting to use.
